If you go into your nearest supermarket and look at the ingredients of most antiperspirants you will find some of the following: aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate, “rock salts” or potassium alum. These all form a group called Aluminium Salts, so why are these in our antiperspirants? Aluminium  salts act by blocking sweat ducts under the arm, this prevents sweat from escaping onto the skin surface and reduces the moist environment in which odour causing bacteria can multiply.

Should we stop using antiperspirants containing aluminium salts? The following is from Breast Cancer UK:

“There is some scientific evidence that endocrine disrupting chemicals found in deodorants and antiperspirants may increase breast cancer risk. Most antiperspirants contain aluminium salts and some scientists believe these may increase breast cancer risk. Other types of deodorants contain perfume and anti-microbial agents such as parabens; some of these are EDCs which may be linked to breast cancer”.

This has really made me think about what I put on my skin and how this might impact on my health, I also attended a talk this year about the menopause and how we can reduce symptoms. Aluminium salts came up again as  it was suggested by the speaker that these chemicals along with parabens can have a direct effect on the endocrine system which in turn can increase menopause symptoms.

I am now stocking a fantastic product called Fit Pit, a 100% natural deodorant

Free from Aluminium, Parabens, BPAs, Petrochemicals and plastic packaging. Suitable for vegans.

Why it works

Bicarbonate of Soda subtly alters your skins natural pH which prevents smell causing bacteria from thriving. The Coconut oil and Shea Butter, moisturise your skin. Unlike some deodorants it doesn’t merely mask bad smell, it prevents it. And unlike antiperspirants it doesn’t block your sweat glands, which means your body can still remove toxins, making it even healthier for you.

The result is beautifully soft and healthy underarms with a delicious fresh scent.

My Favourite is the Peppermint, just love it!
